Pemba Island is the second largest island of the archipelago, it is situated about 50 kilometres (31 mi) to the north of Unguja Island. Pemba has fully of Natural beauty and rich of culture heritage. Pemba has many beautiful beaches and coral reefs, is home to several dive sites, with steep drop-offs, untouched coral, and very abundant marine life. A great place for Diving and Snorkeling. The island has many historical sites and ruins to explore.
Pemba is surrounded by a large number of smaller islands and islets than Unguja, also has many islands being inhabited among them are Fundo, Kiweni, Kojani, Makoongwe and Panza Island, the other islets are Njao, Kashani, Kokota, Funzi, Uvinje, Misali, Matumbini, Kiweni, Kwata, Mwangi, Yombi and Vikunguni.
The most important towns in Pemba are Chake-Chake (the capital), Mkoani, and Wete, which is the largest city. The centrally located Chake-Chake is perched on a mound with a view to the west on a bay and the tiny Misali Island, where the tides determine when a dhow can enter the local harbour.
Pemba Island was a part of Shirazi Sultanate, the Portuguese colony, the Oman Sultanate, and the British Empire. The trading Centre for ivory, slaves, and spices.
Pemba has been designated an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International because it supports populations of Pemba green pigeons, Pemba scops owls, Pemba white-eyes and Pemba sunbirds
